Baggy – back to the 90s

Baggy-style clothes are an important part of streetwear fashion. Casual and comfortable clothing was already big in the 90s and has made a long-awaited comeback in recent years. Particularly popular in urban fashion and skater fashion, baggy clothes are also popular in completely different directions. Baggy offers the perfect combination of comfort and style and is ideal for anyone looking for a cool and relaxed look.

Baggy jeans or ultra-wide jeans have no limits when it comes to sizes. Wide jeans, which became popular in the 90s, came at a time when a major cultural shift was taking place. Away from the rock stars of the 50s and towards hip-hop artists like Tupac and The Notorious BIG, fashion had to follow. Hip-hop and baggy jeans became one: artists like Wu-Tang Clan, Aaliyah, TLC, Eazy E and countless others wore baggy jeans. Worn as a sign of rebellion, hip-hop gave the middle finger and wore the unconventional fit just for the sake of it.

Baggies made their big appearance in breakdancing, most notably in MC Hammer's 1992 music video U Can't Touch This, and became a fashion element born out of practicality. Hammer pants, which were amusingly nicknamed "Hammer Pants," featured cuffs at the ankles. This feature would loosen up over the course of the decade, leading to a straighter silhouette, such as Kriss Kross' Jump. However, as baggy denim pants became more popular, so did breakdancing, creating a cycle of mutual popularity.

Particularly popular: baggy pants.

The history of baggy pants began in the late 1980s in hip hop culture. Baggy pants were an important part of the hip hop scene at the time and are still inherently associated with the music today. The pants were initially worn by breakdancers and rappers who wore them as part of their streetwear look. Baggy meant wide, loose pants that were often made of cotton or denim. In the 1990s, baggy pants became a symbol of youth culture and urban streetwear. It is said that the pants originated in prison, where the first thing inmates did upon arrival was to have their belts removed, which was intended to prevent violence. This led to low-hanging pants and loose looks. This appearance developed into the style that we still have today.

Origin of the Baggys

In the 90s, the pants were available in many different colors and patterns and were worn by many different groups, including skaters, surfers and rappers. The popularity of baggy pants peaked in the early 2000s. Many pop and hip hop artists wore the pants on stage and in music videos, which resulted in the fashion gaining a decent amount of mainstream traction. Baggy pants were even adopted by some high fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier in their collections.

The pants are still worn by many hip-hop artists and streetwear enthusiasts and are an iconic piece of clothing in this culture. The first famous models came from Southpole - here in Germany, Paco was particularly popular. Karl Kani and Pelle Pelle shaped the era with their now iconic models and Dada Supreme, Triple 5 Soul and Cross Colours were also very popular in the 90s.
